Dutch Chocolate Shop
217 West 6th Street, Downtown LA
Built in 1914 and modeled after a German beer hall, this former chocolate shop will become an engaging restaurant/bar that preserves remarkable details like century-old handcrafted tiles. A designated Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument, the subterranean Dutch Chocolate Shop holds groined-vault ceilings and 21 custom tile relief wall murals depicting scenes of daily life in Holland, painted by by renowned Pasadena artist Ernest Batchelder. The overall project rehabilitates the four-story unreinforced masonry structure, and includes a conversion to creative office on the floors above.
